Ramadan

Ramadan is ninth month of the Islamic Calendar and it is the holiest time of the year for Muslims. It is a time for spiritual reflection and renewal through strict fasting from food and drink from dawn till sunset for 29 or 30 days. The month of Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon (Muslims may differ about the start and end date of Ramadhan because of moonsighting issues).

It is stated in the Qur’an: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183).

The purpose of fasting is made apparent here – to become righteous. The Arabic word in the Qur’an is ‘Mutaqeen’ – this means to become God Conscious, pious and righteous. So, fasting is prescribed to us as a means of attaining closer to God and to attain piety.
